Along with the academic program, μSR2011 will include opportunities to explore the timeless marvels and natural beauty of the area.

Wednesday - Xcaret
On the afternoon of Wednesday, May 18, there will be an excursion to Xcaret, an adventure paradise where culture, ecology and Mexican wildlife meet.

Learn more about the Mayan culture as you explore the ancient ruins in the park. Swim and snorkel your way through the Underground River. Marvel at the beauty of the butterflies in the Butterfly Pavilion – and be sure to see the 700 square-foot stained glass ceiling! Swim with the dolphins or explore the Aquarium where the giant sea turtles live. Or simply relax and swim along the beaches and inlets throughout the park.
Once the sun goes down, prepare for a one-of-a-kind celebration of the best traditions, history and mysticism of Mexico. Be amazed by the embroidered costumes, music and rhythms of 260 artists as they tell the stories of Mexico’s rich history, from a pre-Hispanic Ball Game to the Conquest of Mexico to the mariachis and charros of contemporary Mexico.

Saturday – Chichen Itza
Be sure to book your flight home for Sunday so you can enjoy a rare look at the ancient Mayan pyramids at Chichen Itza. We have organized a full-day excursion to this breath-taking World Heritage Site for Saturday, May 21.

Chichen Itza is located in the Yucatan Peninsula, about 117 miles west of Cancun, and was recently named as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. This is of little surprise as its size, symmetry and astrological importance are a testament to the Mayan civilization. A visit to this grandiose Mayan city is a must for anyone traveling to Cancun.
